TRANSFORMING GOVERNMENT AGRICULTURAL SOFTWARE: ACCESSIBLE UX/UI REDESIGN FOR QUEENSLAND FARMERS

The Queensland Government’s Department of Primary Industries runs Breedcow & Dynama, a cattle breeding and herd management calculator used by farmers across the state. The tool had been around for years and packed with useful features, but the spreadsheet style interface hadn’t kept up with how people expect software to work today. Farmers were struggling to navigate it, support requests were piling up and adoption was lower than it should have been.
We redesigned the entire experience. Clearer navigation. Simpler layout. Fully accessible and compliant with WCAG standards. The result: a modern platform that works the way farmers expect, and a support team with far fewer calls to field.

The Challenge We Faced

CRITICAL
USABILITY FAILURES
COMPREHENSIVE UX/UI REDESIGN REQUIREMENTS

Why Queensland Government Partnered With Us

The Queensland Government needed more than visual design. They needed a partner who could transform complex agricultural software into an intuitive, accessible experience while meeting strict government accessibility requirements. This required deep UX/UI expertise, understanding of government compliance, and the ability to translate technical functionality into user-friendly interfaces.

Our User-Centered Approach: We began by deeply understanding both the complex functionality of Breedcow & Dynama and the needs of its users. Farmers, agricultural economists, and rural advisors needed to model breeding scenarios without technical barriers. We completely restructured the information architecture, reordering content to follow natural workflows. Progressive disclosure through toggles and collapsible sections reduces information overload. We designed a WCAG  compliant color system that works for color-blind users. Clear visual hierarchy and intuitive navigation pathways replaced confusion with clarity. Finally, we developed a comprehensive Figma design system with reusable components, detailed specifications, interactive prototypes, and complete documentation. Throughout the 1-2 month engagement, we maintained regular check-ins with agricultural economists and technical stakeholders, iterating based on feedback while accommodating government review processes.

Accessible, User-Friendly Interface

Transforming an incomprehensible Excel-like interface into a modern, accessible tool required careful attention to color, typography, layout, and progressive disclosure. All while meeting government accessibility standards.

Accessible Launch & Developer Handoff

Accessibility Compliance Achieved: The redesigned interface meets all WCAG standards for government digital services. Farmers with visual impairments or color blindness can now effectively use the tool. Proper color contrast ratios, accessible text sizing, color-blind friendly palettes, and meaningful visual indicators replaced the confusing original scheme. The tool is now truly inclusive for Queensland’s agricultural community.

User Experience Transformed: What was once an incomprehensible Excel-like interface is now an intuitive, modern tool. Clear visual hierarchy, logical information flow, and progressive disclosure reduce cognitive load. Users can navigate confidently through complex breeding calculations without constant support calls. This significantly reduces the government’s support burden.

Developer-Ready Deliverables: We provided two complete prototype pages demonstrating the new design approach. A comprehensive component library with reusable UI elements. Detailed specifications for backend developer implementation. Interactive Figma prototypes showing functionality. Clear documentation ensuring design consistency across all pages. This enabled efficient, accurate implementation.

Project Success Despite Extended Timeline: Despite the 1-2 month timeline with multiple stakeholder review cycles, we maintained clear communication and flexibility throughout. The Queensland Government team expressed consistent satisfaction with the logical progression and replicable design system. The project showcased our ability to work within government processes while delivering transformative results.
